Goddess Kali is the primal deity of the Dasa Maha Vidya. The Dark Goddess is carried in the illusion of Maya by the endless prostration of Lord Shiva, who lies Himself down as a corpse at Her lotus feet. The posture of the fierce Goddess carried upon the corpse of the Almighty Shiva symbolizes the purpose of death and reincarnation. The ten forms of Lord Vishnu were created by the blessings of Goddess Kali.
The divine posture expresses the true nature of Maya, or spirituality in a materialistic world. In this Yuga, when the world is immersed in suffering due to sins, everything is transformed into a crematorium. Even in this darkness of ignorance, the Goddess rules Supreme as she resides in the crematorium, carried by Her consort.
She is depicted with a fierce expression, even laughing, intoxicated by her victories over evil. She has four arms, symbolizing the four directions in the mortal world. She wields a sword and holds the decapitated head of a demon in her left hand. On her right hand, she gives boons and exudes fearlessness. Her extended tongue denotes her bloodlust and hunger to put an end to evil blood. Her nakedness symbolizes pure feminine power (Shakti), which dominates the material existence.
May the Devotee be Aware of Kali KundaliniThe worship of Kali Mahavidya should be performed under the guidance of a Master. Otherwise, the Adhi Vidya can be harmful to the Sadhaka and his family. Sunday nights are held as perfect occasions for worship because of the position of the Pushyami Nakshatra. The devotee should wear black clothes and be nourished on a strict diet of grains. The Sadhaka should wear a Kali-Hakik mala or a Rudraksha garland. The purpose of the worship is to raise the
Kundalini energy through the Anahata Chakra because such a movement nullifies the negative impact of Saturn or Shani Graha. The Kundalini energy is often described as a naked woman sitting in a coiled position. Some mystics also describe Kundalini as a Serpent Goddess. The nakedness here symbolizes complete purity and innocence and victory over worldly desires. Goddess Kali is also known to adorn serpents like her consort, Lord Shiva. Experiencing the dark force of her holy nakedness is made possible by the deep practice of Tantra. A knowledgeable Tantric utters the Mantra of Goddess Kali to raise the aural vibrations of the devotee to her sphere of benevolence.
